On the afternoon of January 6, 2010 the Community Care Food Pantry went from nearly bare shelves and empty freezers to overflowing capacity. The first Wednesday of each month is UCAN day. The pantry stocks up once a month with various foodstuffs from UCAN in Roseburg. All throughout the month the inventory is supplemented by non-perishable donations from community citizens. Because of heavy usage during the holidays the pantry was at an all time low in inventory. Thanks to the generous donation of foodstuffs from Sherm’s Thunderbird Market in association with UCAN volunteers spent 2 ½ hours unloading boxes and filling shelves and freezers with an unbelievable variety of food. The total bill from UCAN that day? $54.00! The Sherm’s food was completely free.
A few months ago, UCAN provided 3 brand new upright freezers and high quality industrial strength shelving to the Community Care food pantry in order that we may better provide and distribute foodstuffs. UCAN has since also provided a new computer for pantry record keeping. UCAN is a very valuable resource. It makes good use of resources that are already in the state. Instead of nearly expired food being tossed in the trash from grocery shelves this valuable commodity is captured and distributed to food pantries throughout the state of Oregon.
If you look closely at the pictures you will see for yourself the shelves filling up and the freezers as well. Actually, I only provided before and after pix of one freezer. Please visit the pantry and see for yourself God’s Providant hand in action. If enough people show interest we can arrange a day and time for a group tour.
I would also like to add that in the last few months the CC food pantry has been the recipient of several generous benefactors throughout Douglas County. The total is over $3,000! Of course, the ongoing support from the surrounding community is what makes our Community Care food pantry thrive and be such a special gift to the Glendale area.
