THE WORD FOR TODAY
Judges 2:1-3 1 Then the Angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: “I led you up from Egypt and brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you. 2 And you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this? 3 Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be thorns in your side,[d] and their gods shall be a snare to you.’”
A rabbit was hopping down the road one day when he came upon snake. The snake was in a predicament. A rock had fallen on it and it couldn’t get away. The snake asked the rabbit, “Please help me…remove this rock so I can go home.” The rabbit responded, “No…for surely you will bite me.” The snake promised, “No…I will not bite you just please help me.” Finally after a long conversation the rabbit pushed the rock off the snakes back. Immediately the snake curled up and bit the rabbit.
Israel was making deals with the people of the land. Rather than destroying the altars of the people they were tolerating the idolatry and rebellion against God. They were making a deal with the snake not to bite them. God’s verdict on their disobedience, “I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be thorns in your side, and their gods shall be a snare to you.”
We are no different. We make deals with the enemy under the guise of compromise. We twist Godly morals into unrecognizable pretzels under the umbrella of pluralism and tolerance. We condone actions, attitudes and lifestyles…even in our own life…that are an abomination to God. Is it no surprise then that these “things” become a snare and a thorn in our flesh?
We cannot make a deal with a snake…he knows nothing more than to bite.
Lord, find us faithful to You and help us reject unholy alliances…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
