THE WORD FOR TODAY
1 Kings 16-18
1 Kings 16-18
1 Kings 18:26 26 So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, “O Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice; no one answered. Then they leaped about the altar which they had made.
The old west was known for its duels. Two gunmen would stand away from each other a certain distance. Then the one with the quickest draw and most accurate shot would shoot the other one. The opening scene of Gunsmokealways had a scene of Matt Dillon winning a duel with a criminal.
Elijah was in a spiritual duel with the prophets of baal (small caps intentional). He challenged them to build an altar, make a sacrifice and call upon baal. Elijah would do that same and call upon GOD and which ever; God or baalanswered, would be the one true God. Our text reveals the prophets of baal’s first attempt. They pleaded and leaped on the altar but, “There was no voice; no one answered.”
A false god can’t answer because he doesn’t exist.
We serve a living God who answers our cries. We serve a living God whose ears and heart are attentive to our hurts. We serve a living God who knows our very name. Elijah reminds us in a powerful way that we serve the living God who created us and gave us life. We NEVER have to worry about HIM not hearing us!!!
Lord, You always hear the cry of Your children and for that I praise YOUR Holy, Majestic and All Powerful name…in Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
