THE WORD FOR TODAY
Ruth 1:3 3 Then Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons. 4 Now they took wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth. And they dwelt there about ten years. 5 Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died; so the woman survived her two sons and her husband.
One of the top three stressors in life is “the loss of a loved one”. Ask anyone who has wept beside the grave of someone they love and they will tell you it is the “WORSE” thing they have ever experienced.
Just do the grief math for Naomi…a husband and then her two sons. Those three loses had to be devastating to her. If you feel a sense of desperation for her then you begin to sense how difficult it is losing a loved one.
Some expert’s say that grief takes place in a series of stages and then you are over it. REALLY!!! We grieve our loss the rest of our life. We always miss the one’s we love. We always need God’s grace and the hope of HIS promise to sustain us in loss. The great myth of grief is that we “get over it”.
Dr. Alan Wolfelt from the Center for Loss speaks distinctly to the journey of grief. He asserts that we never “get over” grief but rather that we reconcile with the loss. That reconciliation process takes a lifetime. You see this when you read the book of Ruth. Naomi would never be the same after three consecutive losses but she would also be ‘better’ because she had a strong companion in her journey…God and the presence Ruth her daughter-in-law.
Our companion is God the Father as He sustains us and sends His angels to comfort and help us in our time of sorrow. As Christians, we hold to our faith during a time of loss. Trusting in Christ gives us comfort in knowing His strength and grace for the journey of grief. It is that strength and grace that is needed for the long haul.
Father, we sting from the reality of death today. Our hearts hurt for those we love…fill us with YOUR sustaining grace…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
