Isaiah 31:6-7 6 Return to Him against whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted. 7 For in that day every man shall throw away his idols of silver and his idols of gold—sin, which your own hands have made for yourselves.
The disobedience of Israel was deep. God’s anger was about to be poured on a generation of stubborn and prideful people. After his punishment there would be a call to “return to HIM against whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted”. In that returning they would throw their idols of silver and gold. They would rid themselves of any distraction toward God.
We have idols of gold and silver today. Some worship money more than they worship God. Some worship people more than they worship God. Some worship sports, willing to yell for their favorite football team but not willing to sing a song of praise to HIM who saved them. Some worship attitudes and morals more than they worship God.
Idols are alive and well today. They may not be silver and gold but they destroy our devotion and faithfulness to God nonetheless. I know what distracts my attention from God. I know those “things” that steal away my time…my life for HIM. I have a twofold task in ridding myself of those distractions: return to HIM and throw away anything robs us of time with God.
We want to return to HIM but throwing away those things we have spent so much time accumulating...not sure about that. But if we want our heart full of HIM we will return to HIM and throw away every distraction.
When I was deployed on USS Abraham Lincoln in 2001 we experienced a water shortage. I really couldn’t believe it because the ship could virtually supply enough water for a small city to survive. We were on water rationing. Not long after the rationing they discovered a major leak where thousand and thousands of fresh water was being dumped into the ocean as fast as they could produce the fresh water.
Let’s not wake tomorrow or the next day…empty because our devotion…our love…our faithfulness to God has been leaking in the ocean of life. Return to HIM…throw away anything that robs HIM of our devotion.
Father…as Your child reads this devotion…cause them to look to YOU…the HOLY ONE of Israel. Cause us to desire YOU in all of YOUR glory…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
