Ecclesiastes 7:9 9 Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, For anger rests in the bosom of fools.
I was watching a movie that featured a boxing match between a bad and a good guy. The good guy was losing until he made the bad guy angry. His corner man looked at the bad guy’s corner and said, “Anger is the enemy.” The good guy wins the boxing match in dramatic fashion.
Anger is the enemy…so…”Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.”
Let’s consider some good steps we can take to prevent anger from causing us greater problems.
Step ONE: Step AWAY from the moment for as long as it takes to understand the situation clearly. We can only get real perspective by stepping away for a while. Every time I punished my children while I was angry I regretted that punishment.
Step TWO: NOTICE your bearings. Where are you? What is your surrounding? Who is listening? Did you know that anger robs us of situational awareness?
Step THREE: GRAB your tongue. Now I don’t mean literally but I perhaps it may take a literal grabbing of the tongue. The tongue is what gets me in trouble the most. When I mix my tongue with anger I always say something I regret. Grab your tongue…you can’t say anything intelligible when you grab your tongue.
Step FOUR: ENGAGE common sense. Anger causes us to lose common sense like a hole in the Titanic. That ain’t good! Common sense is a powerful antidote for out of control anger.
Step FIVE: RESPOND don’t react. This is very elementary nuclear science, but when a nuclear reactor’s control rod’s don’t work properly…a melt down is forthcoming. Any reaction to an angry moment may very possibly lead to a meltdown. THAT AIN’T GOOD!
Wisdom says, “Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry…”
Father, grant us YOUR wisdom to manage any angry moment I encounter this day I need your help…In Jesus Name…AMEN!
