THE WORD FOR TODAY
Truth for Today
Zechariah 7:9-10 Thus says the Lord of hosts, “Execute true justice, show mercy and compassion everyone to his brother, do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother.
Am I my brother’s keeper? That is the question that rings through the ages from generation to generation. That question was asked because of a problem with the first family. No, not the president but two brothers, Cain and Abel. Cain was jealous and then in rage killed his brother. When confronted by God his question was, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
God teaches us through Zechariah that we are our brother’s keeper. We are to show justice, mercy and compassion as we relate to each other in life. We are challenged to not oppress the fatherless, the alien and poor and to not plan evil in our heart against our brother.
It is really hard to imagine that a person could intentionally plan evil against other people. But, evil is only bound by our ability through God’s good grace to rebuke it. Evil only has the power we give it as we relate to others in our world.
We give evil power when road rage takes over and causes us to do something ungodly. Evil is given power when we cheat a brother out of what is rightly his. Evil definitely has power when we slander a good name for no reason other than jealousy.
We must hear the challenge, “Let none of you plan evil in his heart against his brother.”
Father, we thank you for the gift of relationships. We are grateful for our relationship with you and we pray that it will spill over into our walk with each other and with those around us…may we about in justice, mercy and compassion and with your help love each other...IN JESUS NAME…AMEN!!!
