THE WORD FOR TODAY
Truth for Today
Matthew 15:19-21 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
A little is a lot in the hands of Jesus.
Sailors aboard an aircraft carrier consume between 1.5 to 2.8 million dollars worth of food. Per month Sailors will eat 12,000 pounds of rice, 3,000 pounds of fish, 8,000 pounds of steak, 8,000 pounds of fresh potatoes per month. That is a lot of food.
With very little, five loaves and two fish, Jesus feed five thousand people with twelve basketfuls of left overs. He knew something about feeding a bunch of people. But He did it in a miraculous way.
There is a great spiritual truth in Jesus feeding the 5,000: Jesus cares deeply about the needs of people. He cared so much that day that He displayed the awesome power of God. It must have been easy for Him because He was there when God the Father provided “manna” from heaven for the children of Israel. Feeding 5,000 was as simple as giving thanks and serving the food.
I know something about Jesus feeding me. Many years ago one Sunday morning I loaded my wife and kids up to go church without having breakfast. Our cupboards were bare. We had no food. I felt awful. After church that morning my Church Treasurer handed me a check so I knew we would be able to get some groceries. As we left the building to go to our car what we saw shocked us. Piled and stacked on the ground at the trunk of the car was more food than I had ever seen outside a grocery store. That Church had given us a food pounding. The food from that pounding filled out cupboard. From that day to this our cupboard has NEVER been empty. GOD IS FAITHFUL!
Jesus cared about the needs of 5,000 people. He cared about the needs of a young Pastor with a wife and two little children. He cares about YOUR NEEDS!
A little is a LOT in the hands of Jesus!
Lord I believe in YOUR awesome power to provide for YOUR people. I believe YOU care so much that YOU will fill empty cupboards. I believe that YOU can take the little that we have to offer YOU and do amazing and miraculous works. I praise YOUR name…In Jesus Name…AMEN!
