Truth for Today
Ezekiel 25:6 6 ‘For thus says the Lord GOD: “Because you clapped your hands, stamped your feet, and rejoiced in heart with all your disdain for the land of Israel,
You may remember the classic story of the little sister who is consoled by her mom while at the same time her older brother is being disciplined. As mom holds the little sister she looks at her older brother and sticks out her tongue as she mocks him.
It’s not good to rejoice in the sufferings discipline of others. Just ask the Ammonites. They had seen the suffering of God’s people. Rather than be sad and pray for Israelthey rejoiced. Sort of like spoiled kids pointing and laughing at someone who just dropped their lunch tray in the cafeteria.
I know it is so easy to rejoice when our enemies suffer. But Jesus taught us to pray for our enemies. He taught us to show great respect and great restraint when we deal with those who disagree with us.
It is important that we understand the real enemy here…it isn’t those we claim are our enemy. The real enemy is hate. Hate causes us to clap our hands, stamp our feet and rejoice when our “enemy” is in trouble. Hate makes us say, “Well that is what they would do to me.”
Jesus taught us the cure for hatred…LOVE. Yes love even for our enemies. Even for those who spitefully use us. So let’s love as Jesus taught us to love…but not just taught...He modeled that love when in agony on the cross He said, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”
Father, help us as we love our enemies. Fill us with Your love, grace and dignity as we relate to even those who disagree with us…help us we pray…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
