THE WORD FOR TODAY
Daniel 1-3 (Click to read Today’s Word)
Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Regret is a powerful emotion. I have met so many people who struggle with moments where waves of regret from past decisions roll over them, threatening to drown their soul. I know the feeling of that kind of regret…you wish you could turn back time and undo that terrible decision. But time moves forward…it never goes backward.
We may have regret in our past…but our future…those few precious moments that lie before us…and our present moment…well now they don’t have to be filled with regret. Let’s learn a lesson from Daniel. The Bible says that, “Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portions of the king’s delicacies.” He purposed in his heart. That simple decision put Daniel in a position to never be victimized by regret.
We know what pollutes our soul. We know how easy it is to be “defiled” by the delicacies of this old world.
How much pain could be avoided if we would “purpose in our heart” to never get involved in certain behaviors, or to “purpose in our heart” to always be faithful in our walk before God and others? It’s an ethical decision. It’s a great decision. It adds power to our life and no doubt it increases our witness in dramatic and wonderful ways.
O merciful and loving Father…we purpose in our heart to walk with YOU. We know that You will protect us and hold us. We know that YOU are real and we need YOUR help. When the prince of this old world tempts us with a table set with ruined food…may we turn away from his temptation by the power of YOUR strength living and residing in us…In Jesus Name Amen!
