Truth for Today
Amos 8:11-12 “Behold, they days are coming, “ says the Lord God, “That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall wander from sea to sea and from north to east; They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, But shall not find it.”
Why would God not want anyone to hear His word?
That is the burning question in my mind as I read our truth for today from Amos 8:11-12. What could cause God to shut down the hearing of His people so much so that they would “wander from sea to sea and from north to east, they shall run to and fro’ and not find His word.
Not hearing and doing His word is a logical answer to that question. All of the proclamation of the prophet had done nothing. The course of their conduct had not changed. Their idolatry was worse than ever. The oppression of the poor was growing worse. So God was saying, “You will not hear me again…I will make sure of it.”
First Church Big was excited about their dynamic new Pastor. His interview with the search committee had been the best that any member of that committee had ever heard. His trial sermon was the most powerful message the church had ever heard. Young, dynamic, energetic were all reasons that they were hopeful.
His first Sunday was true to form. He preached a powerful message. Many came to the altar.
His second Sunday was interesting…he preached the same sermon he preached the previous week. Folks thought, “Well he is young maybe he doesn’t have as many sermons built up in him.”
The third Sunday called his deacons to action…he preached the same sermon as the previous two weeks. They confronted him with this question, “Do you have more sermons than that one?” He answered, “I sure do. But I won’t preach them until you practice this one.”
It is important to be both “hearers and doers” of God’s word. God’s word is intended to bring change into our life. A professor told me years ago, “You are reading God’s word the right way when…in the process of reading you have to stop and repent because you are the bad guy in the story.” It is time hear and do His word and allow it to shape how we live.
Word of God, please speak to our heart and help us to change for your glory and for your honor. Help us Lord to be hearers and doers of your wonderful word...IN JESUS NAME…AMEN!!!
