Truth for Today
Zephaniah 1:12 “And it shall come to pass at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and punish the men who are settled in complacency, who say in their heart, The Lord will not do good, nor will he do evil.”
Complacency…self satisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation, is a terrible state of existence for anyone…but most especially for a believer.
The Lord made a commitment that He would search Jerusalem with lamps and He would punish the men who are settled in complacency. These people chose this state of mind. They chose to believe that God would not do good nor will He do evil. They chose a system of belief that would be their downfall.
We must be very careful that we don’t fall into the trap of “smug satisfaction” or even a hint of satisfaction. There is a segment of population that really believes that God is not concerned nor is He involved in the affairs of people. They need to read God’s Word. He is concerned with our life. He desires to do good for His people. He speaks against those would believe that He doesn’t care for His creation. Zephaniah teaches us that God will deal with that “smug satisfaction” and it will not be pleasant.
We must be constantly stirring the waters of our faith so that we don’t become complacent. We must come to His Word and allow its truth to stir our heart. We must fellowship with God’s people and learn how we can better serve and help others around us. We have to live lives of faith and trust and confidence in Christ. We are called to be a people who live a dynamic faith in a hurting world. So there is no room for complacency in our life.
Father, send the light of your Holy Spirit and search every corner and crevice of our life. Help us to stir up our faith so that we don’t grow complacent and self satisfied...IN JESUS NAME…AMEN!!!
