Truth for Today
Ezekiel 16:62-63 “And I will establish My covenant with you. Then you shall know that I am the Lord, that you may remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth anymore because of your shame, when I provide you and atonement for you have done,” says the Lord God.
I left home at the age of 18 and struck out on my own. I discovered a great big world filled with more problems than parties. In those early days I was often tempted to get involved in things that if my Mama knew about would land me in big trouble. The potential shame of having to face my Mom with my behavior saved me from getting into all kinds of trouble.
It’s the same with God…just like the people of Israel we are tempted to break faith with our Lord every day. There is always shame linked to that breaking of faith. God spoke through Ezekiel and challenged the people that they should remember and be ashamed and never open their mouth anymore because of their shame.
When I want to step in the judgment seat a little too quickly, I think back on my life…shame has silenced my tongue many times. In a day and time when judgmental attitudes are filling the church maybe we need a dose of shame that would protect us from speaking when we really have no right to say a word. Remember Jesus said, “Judge not lest you be judged.”
Even as I write these words I am aware of the Godly shame that must temper every word I type…because in the end our only hope is offered by God in His goodness. Because you see He offers atonement for all we have ever done. We know that atonement to be the precious blood of Jesus. You remember that love covers a multitude of sin and His blood is sufficient for our every transgression.
So then shame may silence our tongue…but His atonement grants us hope and strength and the ability to speak those Godly words of hope to those in need.
Jesus…thank you for your blood…which washes away my sin…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
