Truth for Today
Jeremiah 5:31 “The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own power; and My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?”
Chapel services in my first two years of college at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO, were the most powerful worship experiences of my life. We had tremendous preachers with men like Adrian Rogers, Ronny Floyd and many more that challenged us from God’s Word. Around the middle of my Junior year I noticed that one or two of the services a week consisted of testimonies from Christian businessmen with no preaching of the Word. It was about then that student life on campus took a turn as well. Girls dressed more provocatively, more alcohol consumption, sexual misconduct and cheating in the classroom indicated a lowered standard of morality. It was clear our campus was in great spiritual decline.
A group of us began to pray for our school. Through those prayers God showed us something very powerful…our campus worship life had changed because of a neglect of the preaching of God’s Word. We met with the Dean of the School of Theology. He told us that many of the liberal arts major students had complained about “so many preachers” and demanded to have Christian businessmen participate in Chapel. Well it was clear to us what was missing…the clear and powerful preaching of God’s Word.
School leaders soon saw what we prayed for and returned to the unapologetic preaching of God’s Word, much to the dismay of the liberal arts majors. Campus life changed again…for the better.
This is the intent of Jeremiah 5:31. The prophets and priests had a specific role and function. Preach the Word and serve God. Yet they did so falsely and in their own power which means God wasn’t in what they did. The most dangerous element in this text, “And My people love to have it so.” Many students at my college loved not having their sin and rebelliousness challenged. The product then was compromise, loss of character and ultimately SIN!
May we not fall into the trap of easy preaching and easy listening that will result in fast living that forgets God!
Father, may our commitment to YOU and YOUR Word never waiver…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
