Truth for Today
Jeremiah 7:27 “Therefore you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not obey you. You shall also call to them, but they will not answer you.”
In my early years I worked as mechanic for Billups Plantation in Indianola, MS. It was a great time in my life. Then in 1982 God called me into a new vocation, “Christian Ministry”. There has been nothing more rewarding for me than the 26 years I have spent in my new vocation. I tried to go back to the mechanic’s shop years ago but God wouldn’t let me.
I wanted to go back because I hit a rough spot. It seemed that the more I preached the worse things grew in a church I pastured. I almost quit. Until I came across what Jeremiah had been called to do. God told him, “You shall speak all these words to them, but they will not obey. You shall also call to them, but they will not answer you.”
I am not sure about you but the thought that the people who are supposed to listen aren’t going to listen would be incredibly discouraging. For Jeremiah I know it had to be very challenging to see his people continue in their disobedience and not listen to the words that could help them. Yet, his life shows that he remained faithful despite the hardship of his ministry.
God expects us to be faithful. We can easily get side tracked when there is not the “visible fruit” of the ministry. But, He first and foremost desires…no He demands that we be faithful. Jeremiah would say later that God’s Word, “But if I say, ‘I will not mention him or speak any more in his name,’ his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.” Jeremiah 20:9
Nor can we stop speaking of Him who loved us. We can’t quit on Him Who went all the way to Calvary for our sins. Let’s commit to being faithful even if others don’t listen. Then we will hear the words of our Savior say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.”
Father, fill us with your Holy Spirit and help us to walk faithfully in this world…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
