THE WORD FOR TODAY
BibleGateway.com - Passage Lookup: Exodus 19-21
12 “ Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
Believers should honor their mother and father.
I spend a considerable amount of time visiting Nursing Homes. I have a significant number of members and/or their family in Nursing Homes. Usually I take Thursday to visit the folks there and have a refreshing moment in their life. I remember one lady who said to me, “OH…my son and his daughter come to get me on the weekends and I am able to be with them…I just love it.” That son is honoring his mom.
One of the Ten Commandments was for God’s people to “Honor your father and mother…” It is interesting that Jesus would have to condemn the behavior of the Pharisees and Sadducees toward their mother and father. He would have to remind them of their obligation to honor them.
I buried my mother before she turned 60. My greatest regrets have been a failure to HONOR her and to HONOR my father who is over 70 years old. I pray that no one reading this devotion has those regrets. If so…take these steps to begin to HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER...
REMEMBER…they are Mom and Dad. No they aren’t perfect. No parent is perfect. There are always “flaws”. Today I want to see and talk to my Mom more than ever before. When they die there is no more opportunity to honor them.
REPENT…of the busyness…the neglect…the apathy…the anger…the stuff that causes us to not honor our father and mother. The commandment of God did not give us an escape hatch because we feel slighted by dad.
RETURN…to the love and devotion and prayer and honor and respect for Mom and Dad. Get back there as ASAP…As Soon As Possible.
Believers must honor their mother and father.
Lord, thank YOU for the reminder to honor our mother and our father…may we be found obedient to YOU…In Jesus Name...AMEN!!!
