THE WORD FOR TODAY
Deuteronomy 24:19-22 19 “When you reap your harvest in your field, and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow. 21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it afterward; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow. 22 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this thing.
One of the highlight of my tour of duty on the Island of Guam was my first Thanksgiving. I had the privilege of leading a food drive where volunteers collected and distributed hundreds of pounds of food to people in need. I was so grateful for the generosity of the people because every person involved had a real heart for those in need.
God has a heart for those in need. He gave instructions for the farmer to leave a sheaf in the field and olives in the tree and grapes in the vineyard…for the stranger, the fatherless and the widow.
I believe God wants us to have a heart for the stranger, the fatherless and the widow. He wants us to help those who in some way can’t help themselves. What can we do?
How about spearheading an effort in your local church to prepare food packages to be given to needy families whenever that need is presented to the church? I can just a see a “food pantry” packed with ready to give sacks of food.
Many cities have ministries that feed the homeless. Ask that ministry what foods they need and collect those specific items and give them to those who are on the frontline in feeding the homeless. Or even better volunteer to help in preparation and serving the meal.
Live life with open eyes and sensitive hearts and willing feet to come to the aid of those in need…God knows what people need and He will touch your heart to move to help that person…but only if you have the openness to be obedient.
Father, give me eyes to see…a heart to care…and the will to move alongside the hurting and the needy in my world. Help each of us be a gift of hope to those who need it…In Jesus Name…
