THE WORD FOR TODAY
Judges 3:9 When the children of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel
When I turn into “Bill the Tool Man Milam” around my house I have my favorite hammer to use. My hammer fits my hands…I have had that hammer for years…it is weighted just right…I know where it is all the time. I always put that hammer in a place where all I have to do is walk over to it and use it. I don’t ever want to place God in that place in my life that I “use” Him only when I need Him.
The children of Israel were beginning to use God like a hammer. They were messing things up by aligning themselves with the gods of the other nations and sure enough God would punish them making them subject to the punishing nation and then the people would cry to Him and He in His faithfulness would deliver them. This is a familiar theme in the book of Judges…and unfortunately for us.
It is easy to want God only at those times that we need Him. It is tempting to leave God out of the unimportant decisions with the unimportant people when we do unimportant things. Until we find ourselves in a rut and cry out to God…and attempt to use Him only when we need Him.
He wants a living relationship with us, living inside us and moving and working and helping and strengthening in our walk with Him. He isn’t some tool we use to beat up the bad guys with…He is our heavenly Father that has our best interests in HIS heart. Let’s be faithful to HIM!!!
Lord, come alive in our hearts today…forgive us when we use you like a well worn tool…forgive us when we get independent and more wise in our own eyes than we should be…we love you and we want our life to show step by step love for YOU…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
