THE WORD FOR TODAY
Judges 16:16-17 16 And it came to pass, when she pestered him daily with her words and pressed him, so that his soul was vexed to death, 17 that he told her all his heart, and said to her, “No razor has ever come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaven, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.”
I get sad when I read Judges 16…the downfall of Samson, a man whose great strength was the envy of many and the salvation of Israel. Samson was no ordinary man. He was the child God sent to grow into a man and deliver the people of Israel from the oppression of the Philistines.
In this passage these are the final days of Samson. He would finally tell Delilah the source of his strength. He would lose his hair and the presence of the Lord. He would be ridiculed and used by the Philistines as a joke.
But they forgot to keep his hair cut down. One day, his hair growing back, they placed him in a vulnerable position in the temple. He called on God for strength one more time. He brought the temple down on all those who were making sport of him.
Our potential with the power of God living and dwelling inside us is incredible. We may not have the strength of a Samson…but we might have wisdom, and grace, and love, and service and so much more because of HIS presence in our life. We might get the boldness to witness for Christ. With God’s power we could have the courage to say NO to satan’s lies and temptations. With God’s power we could sing and praise and pray and preach of HIS great love and grace.
Yes…we need God’s strength…because the strength of the “Philistines” around us demand that we need GOD working in our life.
Lord, fill us with Your power and Your strength…help us as we encounter the Philistines of our day…grant mercy, grace, power and strength to every believer they may be bold in their witness for YOU…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
