THE WORD FOR TODAY
12 “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good?
When I first joined the Navy I learned really quickly the importance of the chain of command. I was scared enough to know that even one rank above deserved a “yes sir” and a “no sir” and an “aye aye sir” or “aye aye maam”. I guess the training took because one of my greatest fears was making someone higher in rank angry at me.
There is no one of higher rank than God. In our scripture today…Moses is reminding the people that they have an obligation to God…that He required something from them. One of those requirements was to FEAR the Lord their God.
Fear has several faces. One is that fear is exactly what the word implies…I am afraid. That fear is based on the fact that we don’t want to make God angry. Scripture records the impact of God’s anger on disobedient people. It isn’t a pretty sight.
Another face of fear is reverent respect. That is we fear Him and obey Him because we have a tremendous reverence, awe and respect for His authority and for who He is. His RANK as the God of all creation demands tremendous respect.
Then there is the fear that is based on relationship. As His children…we don’t want to damage our relationship with God. We are taught in scripture that our sin grieves that heart of God. It hurts Him when we as His sons and daughters choose a path He hasn’t chosen for us. God has a heart and that heart is for His people. He loves us and wants HIS very best…so let’s love…honor and obey Him because we don’t want to hurt our relationship with Him.
Father, like a bruise reed we damage our relationship you through our sin…help us to recognize that sin…and please don’t take your convicting hand from our life…we turn toward You and we trust YOU…IN JESUS NAME…AMEN!!!
