THE WORD FOR TODAY
Deuteronomy 18:9 “When you come into the land which the Lord you God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations.”
When I was a teenager I would get really angry with my Mom because she would not let me go “riding” with my cousins. They were always going somewhere and doing something. When I was 16 I decided that I was going to go “riding” with my cousin no matter what my mom said…hey I thought I was grown. I saw firsthand the kind of trouble that kids can get into when they don’t obey their parents. I also FELT the consequences of not listening to my mom when I got home…I shall never forget that whipping.
God told His people “not to learn to follow” the abominations of the nations in the land before them. He goes on to list all of the things that were considered an abomination and it was quite a list. It’s easy to look at those things and dismiss them as harmless…but that would be a terrible mistake.
There are two reasons I believe God commanded His people not to follow or learn how to do witchcraft, soothsaying, interpret omens, medium and more. One, it would cause His people not to trust Him. And second, it would take way from their devotion to God.
We don’t really need anything that takes away from our trust in and devotion to God. If left unguarded our TRUST IN THE LORD and our DEVOTION TO HIM are left in great peril. It makes sense that if we are spending our time learning His word and living out His Word then we won’t have time for these “abominations”.
I was once a golfer. I was serious about the game. I spent time and money on the game. I read books, watched videos and took lessons. I played the game six days a week. I don’t play golf anymore because I discovered that my “addiction” to the game damaged my trust in God and drained me of my devotion to Him. As Christians we have plenty of distractions…but all we need one major attraction…The Lord. Let’s give Him our trust and let’s show Him our devotion.
Lord, give me wisdom to separate myself from those things that cause me not to trust you and those things that hinder my devotion to you. I trust you more than any of the other things in life. Help me show you my devotion to you as I walk in this world…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
