THE WORD FOR TODAY
BibleGateway.com - Passage Lookup: Exodus 19-21
“You shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the father upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.”
“You shall have no other gods before Me.”
This statement not a quote, it is a commandment. This wasn’t a choice for the people of Israel it was demand upon their life. This is the first of 10 commandments that God gave to the people. But let’s not miss why He gave that commandment.
God said, “For I the Lord your God, am a jealous God.”
We see the negative side of jealousy in relationship. Jealousy in relationship has wrecked many marriages. In this scripture God’s jealousy isn’t a negative thing…it is incredibly positive.
It means He will protect His people. He is the Lord our God. With Him in our life…we don’t need anything else to take His place. He has already shown His protecting power to the people.
It also means He will provide for His people. God had provided manna from heaven. He had given them water to quench their thirst. He wanted to provide for them.
It means that He will prosecute His people. God said He will deal with the iniquity, (sin) of the people until the third and fourth generation of those who hated Him. To prosecute is to hold someone accountable. He hold us accountable for those times when our heart is not completely focused on Him. He is not going to allow our disobedience to go unpunished. That may frighten you now…but consider this…
“All we like sheep have gone astray and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:6 Jesus has borne the pain and the agony for our sins. All we have to do is confess in agreement with Him about our sin.
God is a jealous God. But He is jealous because He knows the depths of evil in this world. He is jealous because He knows the weakness of His people. He is jealous because He loves us and desires His very best for our life.
Father, we love You we lay our life before You. We place nothing in front of You for You are our God…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
