“Keep yourself far from a false matter…”
The drunk husband snuck up the stairs quietly. He looked in the bathroom mirror and bandaged the bumps and bruises he'd received in a fight earlier that night. He then proceeded to climb into bed, smiling at the thought that he'd pulled one over on his wife.
When morning came, he opened his eyes and there stood his wife. "You were drunk last night weren't you!"
"Well, if you weren't, then who put all the band-aids on the bathroom mirror?"
Scripture teaches us, “Keep yourself far from a false matter…” We live in a world that is filled with false matters. We are influenced everyday to believe lies and untruths. The tabloids of America are making a ton of money from our morbid curiosity about celebrities, and let’s not forget the outlandish alien stories.
God challenged His people to make an intentional decision to stay way from, to keep them selves from anything that is false.
In the early 1900s George Riddell acquired the sensational London newspaper The News of the World. Meeting British journalist Frederick Greenwood one day, Riddell mentioned that he owned a newspaper, told Greenwood its name, and offered to send him a copy. The next time they met, Riddell asked Greenwood what he thought of The News.
"I looked at it and then I put it in the wastepaper basket," said Greenwood, "and then I thought, 'If I leave it there the cook may read it,' so I burned it."
David Letterman was interviewing a celebrity that had been making all the headlines of newspaper and tabloids. He asked her headline by headline which was true and which was false. Very few of the headlines were true.
Untruths spread like wildfire. But wildfires can only burn if there is fuel. I have to make the intentional decision that I will not listen to nor indulge in what I know to be false. I suspect I am not alone.
Father, grant us wisdom and discernment to separate truth from untruth. Grant us your spirit that enables us to walk away from that which is false…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
