Truth for Today
Hebrews 3:8 8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness,
One of the leading causes of death in the United States is heart disease. Billions of dollars have been spent in an effort to combat this lethal threat to people. One thing is true…when the heart is not working properly you aren’t working right. One of my good friends had to have his heart “shocked” into rhythm. He said, “I haven’t felt this good in a long time.” He felt great because his heart was working properly.
When our “heart for God” isn’t what it should be there is nothing but trouble awaiting us. The writer of Hebrews warns his listeners “Do not harden your heart as in the rebellion, in the day of trial in the wilderness.” He was referring to the Israelites when they rebelled against God and Moses by their stubborn refusal enter the Promised Land.
It is so easy to harden our hearts against something God desires for us. He wants us to forgive so that we can be forgiven. But…we tend to harbor bitter envy and selfish strife and we harden our heart toward God and someone else and refuse to forgive. He wants us to “HUMBLE” ourselves before Him in His awesomeness. And yet we puff our chest with pride and arrogance. We seem to forget that pride is one of the seven deadly sins. He calls us to love Him and each other. But we shut our heart to Him when we refuse to love someone because we don’t like them.
We must hear the words of scripture again and again and again and again, “Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness…”.
Father, guard my heart by the power of YOUR presence and the conviction of the Holy Spirit…let me never be found with a hardened and callous heart…make it ever new…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
