THE WORD FOR TODAY
BibleGateway.com - Passage Lookup: Exodus 16-18
“So the people rested on the seventh day.”
Most Wal-Mart’s are open 24/7. Many grocery stores are open 24/7. They are always ready to serve the needs of the customer, no matter the time of day. It seems they never take the day off.
God’s people rested on the seventh day. They didn’t gather food. They stayed away from the local Piggly Wiggly. They trusted God to provide what they needed. And He did. They called His blessing Manna. So with His blessing they rested, keeping the Sabbath holy to the Lord.
I remember those days at sea when we were operating 24 hours for days. I remember the weariness that invaded the crew’s life. The decided to put the ship’s crew on what we called, “holiday routine”. We took a day off…it just happened to be on a Sunday. The rest was powerful. In fact the skipper saw that the crew was more effective after a good days rest. The remainder of that deployment every Sunday was holiday routine. We rested on the seventh day.
Taking the seventh day off is not just designed to give us a break from work…it is designed to be set apart as holy unto the Lord. Do you have that day that is set apart as holy unto the Lord? Most of us would say, “Of course, it’s Sunday.” But consider that the average person puts more work in on Sunday than almost any other day of the week. People have joked with me over the years saying, “Well you only work one day a week.” That day is Sunday. Ask any preacher how they feel after church on Sunday evenings.
We need a day of rest. We must have time away from the grind. Our “motor” can’t run 24/7. Many of the farmers in my church are winding down from more than two months of harvest filled with 80 hour work weeks. I know they are tired. They need a day of rest.
God knew we couldn’t go like energizer bunny. So He gave us a gift…we have the gift of the Sabbath…the seventh day…for a reason. Make the Sabbath holy to God. Take a break. Refrain from activity as much as possible. Eat a sandwich or leftovers to reduce the need for work. Join with God’s people gaining refreshment in worship and fellowship. Trust God for all He wants to provide for your life.
Father, teach us to rest. May we set the apart as holy unto You. Refresh us by your Manna from heaven and your spirit which encourages…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
