THE WORD FOR TODAY
Genesis 10-12 Click to Read the Scripture for Today
4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
Why are we so self absorbed? Why are tempted to have the world revolve around us? Why is it said of some of us, “It’s my way or the highway.”? Why does selfishness and self-centeredness abound in American culture? Why do the feel good preachers of our day “motivate” us toward our own destiny…our own success and wellness?
I think of these questions and more when I read Genesis 11:4. It is a precursor to God scattering people over the face of earth because of their “self centered” desire to build a tower to the heavens. They said, “…Let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
The drive and desire for self absorption is as old as Genesis chapter 11. It seems we have a snowball effect of sin…eating the forbidden fruit, hiding from God, killing a brother and we move to an even great level of selfishness in the tower of Babel.
Will you read this statement, “Life doesn’t revolve around me.”? Did you read it? Did you like it? Was there an element of resentment about that statement? I assure you that if you read, “Life doesn’t revolve around me.”…and you sincerely ascribe to that belief you are in the minority.
The truth for life today: Life doesn’t revolve around me!
This truth can be lived out in a simple formula for living: JOY…Jesus, Others and You. Jesus comes first, others come second and you come last. Wouldn’t that philosophy cure the self centeredness of our life? I believe so. Wouldn’t it be great to grow to a place in life where we live, work, worship, minister and witness with Jesus first…others second…and ourselves last.
Be care now…this might mean that you cut less people off in traffic…or that we have to be nice to the checkout girl at Wal-Mart…or that we stop being so cheap when we tip the waitress or waiter…or that we say thank you when some does something nice for us…or that step up and get involved in some service and ministry.
Lord, open my eyes that I may see…open my heart that I may care…and move my feet that I walk and run in service for YOU…In Jesus Name...AMEN!!!
