THE WORD FOR TODAY
Psalm 109-111 (Click to read Today’s Word)
Psalm 109:2 2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful Have opened against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
Glenn Beck said on his tv show yesterday, “Context matters.” He said this because of the brouhaha surrounding Shirley Sherrod. In telling her story of growing with regard to race relations some of her comments were taken out of context. Things that happened 24 years ago…I guess it is never really 24 years ago…its always yesterday. What is clear is that little 2 minute 34 second video snippet doesn’t reflect the full context of her story.
The Psalmist knew something about people speaking out against him, “For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful Have opened against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue.” Don’t miss his statement, “They have spoken against me with a lying tongue.”
Why do we do that? Why do we speak lies about things that are so important? Why would we take 2 minutes of comments and brand a person without getting the full context of their words? Why are some people CONSUMED with spreading lies and rumors? Why is gossip and slander one of the most prevalent sins in God’s church? Why do people love to huddle in their little corners and whisper against others? Why do we intentionally hurt part of God’s creation with senseless comments and words? Why do we make anonymous calls or write anonymous letters? Why don’t we have the courage to own our words?
Ouch…these are stinging questions. They should sting because we should not hurt other people with our words and without all the facts. It is shameful that we are surrounded…in God’s family…by people who hurt each other with their words. Every harmful word spoken is like a poisonous dart hurled with lightening speed. Someone always gets hurt.
Father, close our mouth…silence our tongue…sting our hearts with shame when we speak as we ought not…forgive me, forgive us for those times when we carelessly say things we shouldn’t say…set a guard over our lips that we may not lie…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
