THE WORD FOR TODAY
Psalm 43-45 (Click to read Today’s Word)
Psalm 44:1 1 We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us, The deeds You did in their days, In days of old.
I remember fondly the days when my grandfather, Poppa Holloway, would read to us the scripture. Every grandchild who visited received the story of God’s love. I can’t remember how many times Poppa Holloway read John chapter 3 to us. Today, now that I am older, I understand that passage so much more than I did back then. Its one thing to “hear” a story it is another thing to “live” the story.
The Psalmist declared, “We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us, The deeds You did in their days, In days of old.” Verbal tradition was the major means of passing down the stories of God’s work in the lives of His people. Rather than surfing the local cable channels they spent much time telling and retelling the story. Then when God did the same work in their life they knew it was from God and not some fluke thing from fate.
I am afraid that we don’t tell the story well anymore. I am saddened that my children and grandchildren don’t have memories of me reading John chapter 3 to them…again and again and again. But that is something I could start today. I could make sure that I am not SILENT about the “deeds of God” in my life. I can tell the story over and over and over again. And so can you.
Lord, You have done Your marvelous work in our life…may we not be silent about that work. May our voices forever tell of Your great love…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
