THE WORD FOR TODAY
Job 34-36 (Click to read Today’s Word)
Job 34:3 3 For the ear tests words As the palate tastes food.
I never really enjoyed pop quizzes when I was in school. They always tested whether I had done my homework as I should have. But, the threat of pop quizzes kept me on my toes prompting me to always be ready.
Elihu hasn’t gotten much right but in the midst of his storm of words. In today’s passage he says something right, “ For the ear tests words as the palate tastes food.” We know how the palate works. If good food enters our mouth we get the immediate sensation of pleasure. If bad food touches our tongue well you know what happens next. Elihu says the ear test words…I wonder if he was listening.
The ear can test words to see if they are TRUE! Too often people will speak what is absolutely false in the name of truth. What is even worse, as the words spew out of their mouth the fact of their untruth doesn’t stem the flow. If the ear is working properly it can test the TRUTH of our words.
The ear can test the EMPATHY of our words. Empathy is the ability to feel concern for someone else. Our words show concern or lack of concern. Hmmmmmmm….
The ear can test the SENSITVITY of our words. OUCH!!! Anyone ever stung by insensitive words can relate.
The ear can test the TIMELINESS of our words. Proverbs 25:11 (TLV) says, “Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket.”
The pop quiz is coming…I pray that we do well with our words.
Father, before even a simple utterance test my words by Your Holy Spirit…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
