THE WORD FOR TODAY
Esther 1-3 (Click to read Today’s Word)
Esther 1:20 20 When the king’s decree which he will make is proclaimed throughout all his empire (for it is great), all wives will honor their husbands, both great and small.”
I watched with great interest the other day as a fellow minister opened the car door for his wife. Knowing them and the depth of their relationship I was not surprised to see this man HONOR his wife by opening the car door for her. It is my privilege to honor my wife my by opening the car door for her. This is just one opportunity of many to honor her.
Today’s scripture is about a King whose priorities were messed up. He expected his wife to honor him rather than just the opposite. When she, Queen Vashti refused to be put on display for the kingdom, King Ahasuerus was very angry. He then followed the advice of counselors to refuse to allow Vashti to come before the King no more. I believe Ahasuerus had it all wrong. Honor, something he demanded of his wife wasn’t something he could force upon her. The honor he demanded could surely be his except for the dishonor he showed his wife.
Now this act would ultimately lead to the salvation of Israel as Esther would be crowned as Queen.
The king’s decree had one purpose: to force the honor of all wives of their husbands across the kingdom. But honor is a word that is reciprocal in nature. If you show honor you get honor. If you give respect your get respect. If you display love you get love. HONOR isn’t an issue in real, genuine, loving, growing, enriching relationships. The Bible teaches me that as a husband I am to “love my wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it”. (Ephesians 5:25) Now…when I love my wife with a Godly, Christ like love then I don’t have to really worry about this issue of honor. It won’t matter.
HONOR…it’s a powerful and humbling word. Show it to someone you love today!
Father, help me HONOR those I love…especially my wife this day. Help me HONOR YOU as the Lord and King of my life and may I do all I do for YOUR glory…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
