THE WORD FOR TODAY
Job 10-12 (Click to read Today’s Word)
Job 11:4-5 4 For you have said, ‘My doctrine is pure, And I am clean in your eyes.’ 5 But oh, that God would speak, And open His lips against you,
This past Saturday was a very busy day. I worked with Ray Hausner, one of my farmer friends. I really enjoy getting my hands dirty from time to time. During the day I was proved right about something. I joked with him that wasn’t going to say, “I told you so.” Saturday we were just joking and I said, “I told you so.” In real life…tough row to hoe situations we should never say, “I told you so.”
Zophar, another of Job’s really smart friends levels an interesting accusation against Job. He said, “For you have said, ‘My doctrine is pure, And I am clean in your eyes.’ But oh, that God would speak, And open His lips against you…” Zophar accused Job of sinning against God and it was because of that sin that Job was suffering. Then he just rubs in more, “Oh that God would speak and open His lips against you…”
You know it seems to me that one of the traits of a “friend” is to know when to keep one’s mouth shut. Zophar just didn’t know when to zip it up…shut it up…to be quiet. I pray that I will be a friend that can “be quiet” when nothing need be said.
That may be your struggle as well…when a friend is hurting…to fill the distance with meaningless words. Nothing helps a hurting friend than for a friend to by your side. I remember one of my friends walking the golf course with me after my Mom died. We just walked and played golf. When I cried…he didn’t say a word. Some months later when I found my laugh again he remarked, “I was just waiting on you to laugh again.”
Father, may we friends that wait on our friends to laugh again…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
