Truth for Today
Jeremiah 10:21 21 For the shepherds have become dull-hearted, And have not sought the LORD; Therefore they shall not prosper...”
My step-father taught me how to sharpen a pocket knife. When I was a kid I would watch Daddy sharpen his knife for what seemed like hours at a time. His knife was so sharp that it would shave the hair off of his arm. I remember thinking to myself, “That is really useless and boring.” Then I grew up and one day I reached into my pocket for my knife so I could cut some rope. My knife was so dull that I had to saw with all my strength to cut that rope. Then I discovered the value of a sharp knife.
A dull knife is one thing...but a dull heart...now that is so very different. In Jeremiah chapter’s 10 through 12 God made a series of strong indictments against His people. In one of those stinging accusations God said, “For the shepherds have become dull-hearted, and have not sought the LORD; there they shall not prosper...”
Let’s not miss the statement about the “dull-heart”.
It happens so subtly and gradually that you don’t realize what is going on. One day you’re “on-fire” for Jesus. The next day, that passion for HIM seems like it has been dulled by the hardships and business of life. Hectic schedules and multiple demands make “seeking the LORD” the last thing on our mind. And it’s no wonder that we discover that we have developed a “dull-heart”.
It was the Psalmist who said, “As the deer pants for streams of living water so my soul longs for YOU.” (Psalms 42:1) My dad never had to worry about a dull knife because he wore out his whit stone sharpening that knife. We don’t have to worry about a “DULL-HEART” if we wear out our Bibles because we read it so often and we burn calluses’ on our knees because we are seeking the face of and the heart of God. Oh and by the way...did I mention that it would also keep us sharp as we SING our songs of praise and gratitude to HIM?
Father, if we have become “dull-hearted” forgive us...and call us to YOUR Holy Presence where we can sharpen our soul with Your power and presence...Oh how we need YOU and without YOU our life is nothing...In Jesus Name...AMEN!!!
