Jeremiah 16-18 (Click to read Today’s Word) Truth for Today
Jeremiah 18:12 “And they said, ‘That is hopeless! So we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one obey the dictates of his evil heart.’”
People ignore warnings every day. Notice some that we tend to ignore, “Smoking causes heart disease.” Or “Smoking may be hazardous to your health.” And yet the tobacco industry makes billions because off our tendency to ignore simple warnings.
Maybe you heard about the man driving his bright red convertible on a winding country road. He met a truck. The driver yelled as they passed each other, “PIG!!!!!!!.” The man in the convertible shouted back at him, “COW!!!!!” He accelerated around the curve only to run into a pig standing in the middle of the road.
God was yelling, “PIG!”, to the people of Israel. But they yelled back, “COW!” They were given a very clear warning and a promise. God wanted them to return to Him and stop doing the evil of their hearts. Yet sadly we read, “And they said, ‘That is hopeless! So we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one obey the dictates of his evil heart.’”
One of the most powerful truths in reading scripture is the severe warnings against disobedience. Yet, we think we can get by. We forget that one look leads to a second look and then we are hooked. Ask anyone who has nibbled with temptation on the edge of life and they will tell you that it is a slippery slope that causes all to slide to failure.
I cannot imagine someone saying to God, “And they said, ‘That is hopeless! So we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one obey the dictates of his evil heart.’”. I couldn’t imagine this until I looked in the mirror. Let’s be honest...we have all walked according to our own plan not HIS plan for our life. We only have one cure available...REPENTANCE.
Father, we turn from our disobedience to trust in you. I confess that I have walked not in Your ways but in mine...forgive me...forgive each of us whose heart is touched with conviction...thank You for YOUR hope that is our only HOPE...In Jesus Name...AMEN!!!
