Word of the Day
THE WORD FOR TODAY
1 Kings 13-15
1 Kings 13-15
1 Kings 13:33 33 After this event Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but again he made priests from every class of people for the high places; whoever wished, he consecrated him, and he became oneof the priests of the high places.
I was ordained November 1984 by First Baptist Church of Dadeville, MO. In preparation for that ordination I had a two page list of possible questions that I would be asked. First an Ordination Council met with me asking me lots of questions. Then for more than 30 minutes I was asked questions in front of my congregation. Those questions involved my testimony for Christ, my beliefs about critical doctrines and my beliefs about church polity in the Southern Baptist tradition.
After the questioning the Ordination Council left for their deliberations. I was not present in that meeting. It was a tense time. Do they recommend continuing the ordination or do they recommend stopping the ordination? It was a big day filled with stress that culminated a LOT of soul searching preparation.
After recommending that we continue with the ordination the service resumed. When the Ordained of that church came by laying their hands on my head, setting me apart for Gospel Ministry…I can’t begin to tell you the feeling of immense responsibility that I felt was laid upon me. It was a day I will never forget and a day that drives everything I do in ministry.
But now imagine to my horror, after a one minute search on google, I discovered that if I were being Ordained today I could just go to a website named, “Openordination” and pay $189.95 for the Ultimate Minister’s Package and wham I would be ordained. That’s it…skip all the preparation…skip the surrender to God’s …but that is the problem.
I believe Openordination and folks like them borrowed a sinful practice from Jeroboam, a really bad King in the Old Testament. Scripture records that “whoever” wanted to be made priests were consecrated. Their tribal heritage didn’t matter…a DIRECT violation of God’s commands. The Levites were the chosen tribe for the priesthood in Israel. And that came with very heavy responsibilities. A fly by night priesthood would be devastating to the faith community of Israel…even so today under the New Covenant of Grace.
A fly by night ordination package is absolutely fraudulent and as ridiculous as it sounds. One can buy all the Ultimate Minister Packages available but unless God has called them under the authority of a local church that package is nothing but fire fuel. Ask any God called Pastor and they will tell you that Ordination comes with great responsibility and accountability.
In this day of watered down religion where anything goes we need MEN singled out by God under the authority of HIS Church to PREACH with conviction and authority the WHOLE Word of God. Will you join me in praying that God raise up MEN who passionately love Him and will Live and Preach the Word of God? That He calls men with the courage and conviction to face the firing line of Saints who believe every man who is a candidate for ordination should be tested for what they believe. These days of waffling and wavering demand uncommon courage to stand upon the Truth and Integrity of God’s Word.
Lord, give us discerning hearts to see the falsehood of watered down religion and the courage to stand upon the truth of YOUR Word…in Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
