Word of the Day
THE WORD FOR TODAY
JOB 4-6 (Click to read Today’s Word)
Job 6:2 2 “If one attempts a word with you, will you become weary? But who can withhold himself from speaking?
I am captured by the words that Eliphaz spoke, “But who can withhold himself from speaking?” We say it differently in 2010, “Well you know I just had to say something.”
Job’s friends started out right…they silently sat with him during his grief. Then they blew it…they opened their mouth and began to talk. They had no idea what they were saying. The best thing to do was just to wait silently beside their friend. Instead, they wasted their breath in useless and hurtful words.
Let’s go back to the words of Eliphaz for a moment. He said, “If one attempts a word with you, will you become weary?”. Translated that means, “Will it bother you if I start talking?” He continued, “But who can withhold himself from speaking?” Translated, “I have just got to talk with you about your problem.” Eliphaz had no clue which is evident by the remainder of the conversation in the book of Job. His accusations directed at Job was laced with ignorance and callousness didn’t do anything to help Job.
Proverbs 10:19 says, “When words are many sin is not absent…” That is so true. When I spend my time talking when I really need to be listening I find that I really mess things up. Then I dig myself into a deeper hole by talking some more. And wouldn’t you know, I just didn’t learn my lesson so the same shovel that I dug my whole with, my tongue, I used to bury myself. What I need to do is to say like the great philosopher, Forrest Gump, “That’s all I got say about that….”
Father, bridle our tongue in midst of loss…help us to be present to people’s pain…help us to cultivate the gift of sacred silence where nothing need be said…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
