Truth for Today
Hosea 1:2 2 When the LORD began to speak by Hosea, the LORD said to Hosea: “ Go, take yourself a wife of harlotry And children of harlotry, For the land has committed great harlotry By departing from the LORD.”
Brit, one of my wife’s daycare children was trying to get my attention the other day. I heard her say, “Pop!” But I didn’t give her my immediate attention so she yelled…not even two years old now…she yelled, “POP!” I immediately turned and gave her my undivided attention.
Why was it difficult for the Holy One of Israel to get His people’s attention? Why would a man like Hosea have to go to such extreme measures to simply communicate to God’s people that HE…that God loved them? God’s amazing love for Israel…even in their unfaithfulness…is a powerful theme through the pages of Hosea. He gets their attention…our attention immediately with such a drastic command.
God uses the unusual to communicate. Think about it for a moment. God loved Israel so much that He went to extraordinary measures with Hosea to get the attention of the people. He confronted the infidelity of Israel by telling Hosea to take a wife of harlotry…a prostitute. This is a powerful symbol of the unfaithfulness of Israel, “For the land has committed great harlotry by departing from the LORD”.
We are knee deep in Christmas. Husbands are sweating about the right gift for their wife. Families are being consumed with Christmas vacation travel plans. CHRISTMAS STRESS is ramping up. And yet in the midst of the stuff we can forget that God, at Christmas, simply wants to remind us that He LOVES Us. His love for Israel was so powerful that He told Hosea to marry a prostitute. His love for us is so powerful that HE sent His One and Only Son to die for us.
What more does God have to do to get our attention?
Father, help us to focus upon you and to love you with all our heart, all our soul and all our strength…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
