Truth for Today
Lamentations 4:16 16 The face of the LORD scattered them;
He no longer regards them.
The people do not respect the priests
Nor show favor to the elders.
This past Sunday my Church honored my wife and me because they love us and October is Pastor Appreciation month. As I accepted those words of appreciation I was filled with even greater love for God’s people.
Israel had a terrible heritage of not respecting their religious leaders. They had thrown Jeremiah into a dungeon filled with mud. The accusation in Lamentations is not pretty, “The people do not respect the priest nor show favor to the elders.” Israel would pay a terrible price in punishment for their actions.
I have heard the cry of too many Pastors under attack over these past 28 years. I have cried many tears because of attacks from people I love. Any Pastor worth his salt will tell you that sometimes we just don’t do things the right way and need justified criticism. But as one church member for a Pastor I respect greatly said to me over a year ago, “I am going to do everything in my power to get him fired…” The words of today’s text ring in my heart, “The people do not respect the priests nor show favor to the elders.”
I love the Pastors under whom I have served. Reverend Charles Wesley baptized me and then performed my marriage ceremony. Reverend Sonny Redwine prayed for me and guided me as I surrendered to God’s call to the gospel ministry. His signature is on my License to Ministry. His exceptional leadership has been a model for God’s ministry through my life for 28 years. Dr. Tommy Tutor, now in heaven, encouraged my education. Reverend Phil Mark is a constant and abiding friend to whom I can turn anytime of the day. Reverend Willie Williams is a brother in ministry who loves and supports our friendship in an awesome way. Reverend LaDon Hall in Florida is the consummate Pastor…how his ministry encourages me. These men and more deserve my respect…my honor…my prayers.
Would you honor your Pastor today? Would you pray instead of criticize? Would you build up rather than tear down? I pray so!
Father, thank you for the Pastors who have shaped and encouraged and shepherded me through life…bless them…hold them…protect them…In Jesus Name…AMEN!
