Thanksgiving by J.Smith November - the cotton harvest north of town has begun, and we are vast approaching the end of the month with our national celebration of Thanksgiving. This month at Olivet has been busy. Beginning on Nov. 2, the church had its annual Harvest Dinner at which they surprised the church staff by showing their appreciation. Another project ongoing since October has been the Operation Christmas Child. Olivet set the goal this year of finishing 50 shoe boxes to send. Instead, Olivet far exceeded their goal by turning in 71 boxes Nov. 16 - the deadline. Those 71 children will be a given a Christmas surprise and the message of the gospel in their own language thanks to the generosity of the members at Olivet. And, it is hard to believe, we will be celebrating Thanksgiving next week. A time we can reflect on all the ways the Lord has blessed and carried us through the trials, tribulations, joys and jubilations of 2025. Did you know it is God's will for us to give thanks? How can we have a grateful heart even in difficult times? These are some things the Lord has reminded me on this year: Romans 8:28 - "All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose." If you have accepted Christ Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, this applies to you. We may not always understand all we are going through, but we can trust in the God who holds all in His hands, and He promises to work it for good. Matthew 28:20 - "I am with you even unto the end of the age." Jesus told this to His disciples, and it still stands for us today. We don't face this fallen, hateful world alone, but He is with us to help us. That is something to be grateful for. Job 2:10 -"...shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips." Job is our example in times when we just don't understand, but we keep clinging to our Lord. Perhaps the trial is God displaying His confidence in His people who will honor Him, defying Satan through adversity like Job did. Lastly, we can be grateful because this world that seems to be falling apart at the seams is not all there is. Revelation 22:12 - "And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be." Jesus promises that He is coming quickly and bringing His reward with Him. So, even in the hardships, it is a reminder that this world is just a stepping stone if you know Jesus Christ. He will be coming soon to claim His church, return to dealing with Israel, and then to set up His Kingdom. Is this not something to be grateful for - eternity with our loving Savior.
