A Christmas Visitor by J. Smith Merry Christmas! It is that time again, and what year it has been. From the home-going of six longtime members, the retirement of Bro. Wendell, the gaining of Bro. Chip as interim, a dramatic national election and ministry evaluation of Olivet - it has been a busy year. The Lord has been at work personally in the lives of His people as well as in His church. Olivet has evaluated more areas of outreach and has approved of a new motto to help focus their endeavors: Relating, Reaching and Raising People to Jesus. Since December has arrived so has the Christmas spirit at Olivet. The members have encouraged one another with Christmas cards or prayed for each other's needs. But with the festivities of the season it can be easy to be caught up in the gift giving, the baking, the checklists that we miss the One whose birthday it belongs to. In my family, over the years, we've celebrated Christmas day with a birthday cake for Jesus. And this year, my mom hung an extra stocking for Jesus. These reminders bring to mind a story by Leo Tolstoy - "Where Love is, God is" (1885). In this story a widower shoemaker in his town of yesteryear had in his quiet evenings spent more time reading his Bible. One night the Lord roused him from sleep (much like young Samuel in I Samuel). The man heard the Lord tell him the next day He would visit. This excited the shoemaker, so he was ready for his guest and kept a look out. All he saw were common folk of the town - the street cleaner - he invited in to warm himself; a young mother who was impoverished - he fed and gave a heavier coat; and an apple peddler and young boy trying to steal an apple. The shoemaker had to intervene reminding them of Christ and the need to make amends and forgive each other. When the shoemaker's day was done, he felt he must have missed his prestigious guest. Then the Lord spoke to him again bringing to mind the folks he had helped. And in doing so, he reminded the shoemaker that in helping the least of these, he had waited on his Lord. Matthew 25:40 kjv - "Verily I say unto you, in as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto Me." Jesus came, was born in a stable to be accessible for us all. He died a criminal's death in our place paying for our sins against God. He rose again because His atonement was received on our behalf. May you too know forgiveness, provision and warmth in Christ our Savior and know HIm more daily. Merry Christmas! Business Meeting @ a Glance The November business meeting had... A Church Report Card by J. Smith It is the end of November, and the holiday season is upon us. The nation survived another election and praying still for the mercies of God on us as we go about a new administration in January. There is a spiritual battle for the soul of our people as much as ever. Also, this month, Olivet received its report regarding its ministry evaluation. On Nov. 6, Dr. Jim Waters of the Santa Rosa Baptist Association came and presented his findings after conducting interviews and reading our bylaws and other pertinent documents. During his report, he presented Olivet's strengths and weaknesses. (A copy of his report can be picked up in the church foyer.) In regard to finances, he admitted there is a tightening of all financial areas, even as ministry costs are rising due to inflation. (The church has tried offsetting some of these rising costs this past year, by moving Wed. and Sun. night services to a smaller facility in efforts of reducing the power bill. Also, this past year spending freezes were implemented to cut extra spending and conserve resources.) Dr. Waters did a tour of our facilities and was pleased with how well it had been maintained considering the age of the buildings. He also was glad for the Benevolence outreach, but he did point out that it was only one day a month and what was Olivet doing those other 30 days to witness to the community? Prayerfully, the next step for Olivet is personal evaluation and seeking God's will for Olivet: ministries and new pastor. This evaluation reminds me of Revelation 2-3. I have heard these passages taught as a Report Card for the Church. For instance, Ephesus - Christ appreciated their efforts and their endurance, but He pointed out that their one major problem was abandoning their Lord and their Love. The solution to fix it, Repent and Return. What was the result if they didn't? Christ would come and remove their lamp- the church would cease. And today, we know this church is no longer in existence. There are four more churches Christ had to correct: Pergamum compromised with the world; Thyatira permitted false teaching; Sardis looked busy but was dead; and Laodicea the people ruled and not Christ. He was outside knocking to come in. There were only two churches with no rebuke who passed with flying colors - Smyrna - the persecuted church and Philadelphia- the dependent faithful church. As we give thanks for all God's blessings this next week, may we walk worthy of Him our first Love who loves us. Business Meeting @ a Glance The November business meeting had... * Israel and IDF - God's protection and victory over their enemies *US Military in the Middle East *God's Mercy on the USA God is at Work by J. Smith October is one of my favorite months. For the USA this year it is a countdown to the Presidential elections on Nov. 5. In Israel, it has been historic and full of all three fall feasts. This is a time of change and God is at work. The beginning of the month Israel celebrated the first of their fall feast, as established in the Law in Leviticus 23 – The Feast of Trumpets also known as their New Year – Rosh Hashanah, while running to bunkers from ballistic missiles being sent their way from Iran. And God’s hand is still protecting as not one of those missiles harmed a soul in Israel. The following week Israel celebrated their second fall feast – Yom Kippur or otherwise known as the Day of Atonement where they fast and mourn for their sin and seek God. Then, five days later, the Feast of Tabernacles or Sukkot begins for 7 days. It was the end of this feast, a time of rejoicing, that the atrocities of last Oct. 7 occurred in Israel. It was a rude awakening for the world and especially Israel. It is numbing to think how quickly the world scene was shocked and appalled only to turn on Israel – by turn, they wouldn’t have them defend or overcome their enemies. And yet such scrutiny is not applied to everyone, only Israel. And, this year just as the Feast of Tabernacles/ Sukkot was to begin, the mastermind behind the Oct. 7 horrors was himself to meet his fate – even to the surprise of Israel, and when confirmed, no doubt, some relief for the moment. The promise of Genesis 12:3 still stands. God told Abraham that, “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you.” Has that not been evident in all who have come against Israel this past year? Has it not been evident that those who support Israel have been blessed? Even so, I would have never thought I would see such anti-Semitic talk on US college campuses or in congress as I have in the past year on the news. Even some in the church are ready to disregard the Jewish people of God by replacement theology that states the church has replaced Israel. Such thinking does not hold water biblically or practically. He is not done with Israel. Maybe at one time, I could see how people might think that way as Israel was still exiled and scattered abroad since the rejection of Christ their Messiah. However, God placed them back in the land in 1948. God granted them victory against insurmountable odds in the 6-day war gaining Jerusalem. A dead language was resurrected. Never in the course of human events had a nation returned from the brink as God returned Israel. And now, the promises for Israel are still FOR ISRAEL. God always keeps His promises. The church is separate and will be raptured. Israel’s fall feasts even prophesy of Christ’s second coming and dealings with man. The Feast of Trumpet’s some speculate to be in regard to the rapture of the church and God returning to deal with Israel according to Daniel 9 – this may be. The Feast of Trumpets was also a time of assembly and a victory blast – perhaps it is referring to Israel being assembled from the four corners of the world like is happening today as many Jews return to Israel from around the world. The Day of Atonement is a time of affliction which may foretell of the time Israel will be afflicted during the Tribulation, post rapture, driving them to a national repentance before their Messiah at his second coming. And finally, the Feast of Tabernacles, God will Tabernacle with man during the Millennial Kingdom when Christ is ruling and reigning on earth – and this feast is one we all will partake of during the Millennial Kingdom. So as the autumn weather and leaves change, as politics begin to get down to wire of voting day, and life continues on, these three fall feasts of Israel help me to keep looking up. Jesus is coming again and sooner than most think. Are we praying for the peace and salvation of Israel to know their Messiah? Are we praying for the peace and salvation of those here in the United States? God has set the appointed times; He raises up leaders and puts them down (Daniel 2:21). This is a time of change and God is at work. Business Meeting @ a Glance The October business meeting had... Happy Planting by J. Smith Ahh, September, School is back in session, the summer heat is not quite so intense and the threat of hurricanes. But aside from these things, at Olivet the Deep Dive ministry evaluation is under way. Throughout the past month the men have met weekly for their breakfast; the ladies had their monthly gathering writing cards and visiting our home-bound members. However, as an addition to this month, a special workshop took place Sept. 23 where Mrs. Sue W. led in making witnessing bracelets. She gave credit for the idea to another lady she met while in the hospital. The bracelet incorporates various beads all signifying part of Christ's life. This lady then would give them out explaining the symbolism and in doing so - share the gospel message. Mrs. Sue W. having her own health battles and her husband, prior to the bracelet, had their own method of sharing the good news by creating little wooden crosses and leaving one with everyone who encountered them at the hospital. And so, seed planters are at work at Olivet. Come October, it will be time for Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. It is an opportunity to fill shoe boxes for a child with also $10 included for shipping (if a check, make it out to Samaritan's Purse). This care package will then be sent to a destination across the globe to a child in need, and the gospel will be given in their language. Countless children have learned about the love of Jesus and gift of forgiveness and salvation by this program. Now is also the time to be investigating good kid-friendly tracts to give out for Oct. 31. Some good resources I've discovered are: MWTB.org and LivingWaters.com, but you may have your own source for tracts. As it is also the time for autumn gardens - the weeding and prepping the ground with fertilizer has begun in order to promote a fruitful harvest. The same is in planting seeds for Christ - weeding things out of our lives that would be a stumbling block to others and daily spending time with the Lord, so when He speaks in prompting and leading, we will recognize and hopefully act with obedience. And like the farmer in Mark 4:26-29, we plant the seed in obedience and let God accomplish the work of an abundant harvest. Happy Planting! But By My Spirit, says the Lord by J. Smith Summer - how quickly it has flown. Here we are facing the final hurrah of summer this weekend - Labor Day. It has been another busy month at Olivet beginning with a guest speaker as Bro. Chip injured his ribs while spending time at the beach on his boat with family on August. 1. While climbing aboard via the boat ladder, a wave came a knocked him hard bruising his ribs. After a weekend off his feet to recover, he returned to work the next week and is doing well. Olivet had another A/C unit replaced this month. It was the second unit in the fellowship hall which had been out of commission for a while. It was replaced with the help of the Florida Baptist Convention Revitalization Grant. So, the new unit was installed on Aug. 8. As the A/C was now working and installed, the church enjoyed the newly cooled Fellowship Hall with hosting an ice cream social Sunday, August 11 following the morning church service with good participation an turn out. And then, the following day, Monday, Aug. 12 the children of Santa Rosa county started school for the new 2024 -2025 school year. Wednesday, Aug. 14 was the monthly business meeting, but this was started by a brief introduction to Jim Waters the Director of Missions at our Santa Rosa Baptist Association. He presented briefly about an opportunity, if the people of Olivet so wished, to participate in a "Deep Dive" ministry evaluation. The Deacons unanimously were in agreement for it as was the pastor search committee. And this past Sunday, Olivet voted as a church body to proceed with the process. This evaluation would permit the Santa Rosa Baptist Association to go over church policies and bylaws, financial reports, etc to see where there could be room for improvement. The process would take three months and then Mr. Waters would present his findings and give recommendations by which the church could receive or reject such suggestions. This is in hopes of helping Olivet be ready for the next Pastor the Lord brings our way. This month with all these and more changes happening in the church, and life I have reflected on the verse I started the year with - Zechariah 4:6b - "Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord." When I wrote about that verse in January, I would never have suspected where we would be by this August and going into September. But the Lord is directing and refining Olivet as He still has faithful people here desiring to honor Him. So be in prayer for Olivet as we start the evaluation process: for the Lord's leading and help in whatever changes may be necessary; encouragement in what ever is commendable; and the Lord to be honored in the hearts of His people as we go through this chapter at Olivet Baptist. Business @ a Glance The August 2024 business meeting had... Old Business: Nominating presented the need to remove Susan W's name from Personnel and replace it with Steven M. for the 2024-2025 year. Motion made from committee and no 2nd needed. Motion Passed. Bro. Chip Fox also brought up that in the last business meeting Benevolence being listed in budget was called into question. It was found in the minutes that it had been voted on and approved. But in this current financial situation, Olivet needs to make sure we can do it. $1000+ a month is spent on groceries. Aside from the Convention funding Olivet spends $670+ a month. Joanie had recommended finding funding elsewhere in the budget. For instance, Building and Grounds shifting $4000 to Benevolence. We still will be short but working toward the goal. No questions. New Business: None Being no other business, the meeting came to an end. Motion made to adjourn by Mike W. and 2nd by Scott R. Be Still by J. Smith Ahh, July -- Fireworks, cookouts, and ice cream -- the summer memories all commemorate our nation's birthday celebrating our Declaration of Independence. It is a day to remember the cost of liberty; our founding fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes and sacred honors taking such a bold step in separating from a despotic ruler. And in the founding document we established "We (people) are endowed by our Creator with certain in alienable rights among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." These rights are given by God and no man should thwart it, but many a tyrant has tried. We as a people have learned over the year that liberty is not cheap- Too much blood has been spilt to secure liberty for all. Thus, this past July 4th was our nations' 248th birthday since the signing of that document in 1776, the basis of American Law. At Olivet, we celebrated with patriotic hymns, praising God for such goodness in establishing such a land and using it over the years for good causes. However, at this time, we have strayed from HIm, and therefore, Bro. Chip's sermon was titled "Defeating Canaanite Culture." The Sunday following the Fourth was Olivet's quarterly communion service and remembering what our Savior went through for us. Also, during July, Olivet has had 3 new members join. So, it has been a busy season. Nationally, this July has been historic in the United States - not just for our 248th birthday, but regarding our national political landscape. July 13 former President Trump was shot at and spared. Then Sunday, July 21, it was announced that President Biden would no longer be running for a second term as President. Instead, he has passed the baton to his Vice President Harris to run. It seems a time of great upheaval, and for some it may cause anxiety and fear. But let us as believers focus not as much on the upheaval as to the One who holds all things in His hands, for it is an opportunity for Him to work - to work in the hearts and minds of people, to work in our land, to work among His church. Psalm 46:10 kjv says, " Be still and know I am God. I will be exalted among the heathen. I will be exalted among the earth." The Lord of Hosts is over all, and nothing is impossible for Him. If fact, I tend to think He likes the impossible situations just to show us how easy it is interesting Psalm 46 begins in verse 1 with saying, "God is our refuge and strength a very present help in trouble." He is our Refuge. He is Strength. However, like anyone, I can forget and get overwhelmed by the circumstances because, let's face it, being still, calm and quiet isn't my natures's first response to things outside my control. Can you relate? It is in the moments of being overwhelmed our Heavenly Father is waiting for His children to run to Him. Thankfully, I can approach, can ask for help, and tell Him my fears. In place of these things, He gives peace. Let us as a church be in prayer seeking God's mercy and help on behalf of our nation. Business Meeting @ a Glance The June business meeting had... Trusting Jesus That is All by J. Smith The month of June has come and gone quite quickly. At Olivet it began with our 60th annual homecoming celebration. That day Olivet had Michael Wayne Smith back in concert, and our guest speaker was Mr. Jim Waters, Mission Director from the Santa Rosa Baptist Association. The turn out was very good, and the two remaining charter members, Nellina Larson and Charles Jarvis, were in attendance. Following that occasion, Bro. Chip Fox represented Olivet at the Southern Baptist Convention in Indianapolis, IN. When he came back, he gave a report about what the convention discussed in various issues- some that made the headlines such as topics regarding women pastors and IVF. June being the kick off of Summer has been duly noted here at Olivet. Prior to homecoming one of the sanctuary air conditioning units was replaced. Sadly, a week or so after homecoming the second needed replacing, and so it was done. Now the a/c units in the sanctuary are fully operational, and hoping we could just maintain the others around the property for a while longer. In the June business meeting, it was addressed that there as been a downturn in giving since April. Bro. Chip has asked the Treasurer to look into trends as to what may be leading to these events. But for the time being, the Financial committee thought it best to present the motion to freeze all spending outside of utilities, salaries and insurances (necessary expenses) for the time being. This motion was passed by the church. The expense and trial of replacing industrial a/c units has been a strain, but fortunately the Lord has provided the ability and reserves to cover the costs. But isn't that how life is when we walk with the Lord. He expects us to walk by faith and not so much by sight - after all, He has already promised to provide in His word. Our challenge is trusting in His character and not relying so much on the ways of this world. This month He has been showing me that lesson time and time again. Because in truth we do not know what will happen day to day. Yet as believers we are told not to be anxious. I have been learning to overcome my anxious mode, and as Proverbs 3:5-6 kjv says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and learn not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." To utterly abandon the outcome and trust is not mankind's natural response to things. But in belonging to Jesus, and as the hymn says, let us be "Trusting Jesus that is all." Business Meeting @ A Glance The June business meeting had... Remembering J.Smith The Summer season is here! Memorial Day is around the corner and Olivet's 60th Homecoming. Throughout May a few changes have occurred: the church voted Mr. Chip Fox in as Interim Pastor. He has been hard at work learning about the people and ways of Olivet since taking the office. Also, this month the sanctuary required an expense of a new A/c (industrial size) unit, so the building will be ready as we head into the hot, summer, Florida days. And the church foyer is decorated saluting the church members and their relatives who have served in the US Armed Services by displaying their photographs. And with Homecoming there are 60 years of memories for Olivet - 60 years that through the good and bad times, the Lord preserved this church body to be the hands and feet in our Milton community. With Memorial day and Homecoming comes memories and remembering. Remembering is a good mental exercise - especially in recalling all the ways God has proven His word faithful time and time again. The problem, I find, is slowing myself down long enough to be still, to prayerfully consider and take time to delight in my Lord and ponder over all His answers to prayer, all His promises fulfilled, and all His goodness to me amidst a broken worlds in which we live. Elisabeth Elliott, famed missionary wife of Jim Elliott, is attributed as saying, "The devil has made it his business to monopolize on three elements: Noise, Hurry and Busyness. He will not allow quietness." I don't know about you, but I certainly feel that way in my life most days. Ms. Elliott had great insight on many things. May I encourage you as I challenge myself, to turn off the devices, Tv, and radio and do as Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still and know I am God." Let us take time to be quiet in our raucous world and linger with our Lord meditating and reflecting on HIs goodness and mercies. He is waiting to spend time with us, His beloved. "And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will He be exalted, that He may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him." Isaiah 30:18 kjv. May you have a blessed Memorial Day and Happy Homecoming! Business Meeting @ a Glance The May business meeting... The Pulpit Search Committee - Tim T. said the team was to meet that past Monday, but due to the severe weather the meeting was postponed. They will be going over the questionnaire that will be handed out to the congregation. Then the team will meet with Jim Waters and go over things that are desired in the future pastor. Mr. Waters has a way to filter out resumes things not wanted. Mike W. added that Chip knows the process. Bro. Chip said that Florida Baptist has gone to a network of churches to South East. The committee gives specifics what Olivet is looking for. Example: age, experience, training, salary range, etc. Resumes that fit will then be sent to the church. This saves a lot of time. Resumes will be more in tune with what Olivet is looking for. Mike asked about finding people from other regions. Chip replied that sometimes people from other regions of the country have a hard time relating and adjusting to NW Florida. From his experience those pastors who were not from here didn't stay long. The committee appreciates your prayers. Being no other business, the meeting came to an end. Motion to adjourn by Jeannettte H. and 2nd by Mike W. Prayer was given by Mike W. at 7:10 pm. Meanwhile, during the month of April, we have had several men stand in on Sunday mornings and evenings: Jim Waters, SRBA; Shannon Skidmore; and Chip Fox. Please be in prayer that the Lord would quickly provide His men to be interim and then a full-time pastor. The Lord’s choice is the best choice. As it is April, spring has arrived in Northwest Florida. The azaleas have already bloomed. Now the jasmine and daylilies are beginning to show their radiance, and the weather is reaching the 80s on certain days. The spring and summer gardens have been planted, and the fruit trees are beginning to show signs of promise for the summer produce. Spring, it usually causes a sense of hope for the future. (As long as one doesn’t spend too much time watching the evening news.) As this is an election year, only the Lord knows what the future holds. We should be praying about that too. But beyond the hope of elections and summer vacations, there is the wonderful hope the Lord has given all who believe in Christ – eternity with Him. And then our Blessed Hope – Titus 2:13 – the appearing of our Lord Jesus when He calls His church out in the rapture (harpazo). Do you know that there is a crown for all those who look for His appearing? 2 Timothy 4:8. I don’t know about you, but I wonder what it will be like to be raptured out of this earth. The movies have been made where people vanish and clothes are left in a heap. And then some don’t leave clothes but other accessories that may have been worn like jewelry or bags. But however it occurs, the Bible says it will be “speed of light” fast. 1Corinthians 15:52 kjv says, “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” I have heard that a twinkling of an eye is faster than a blink. It is the time it takes for light to reflect off the eye – in other words the speed of light. That will be fast. And then…well, then we will always be with our Lord and Savior. That is the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 kjv says, “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” Do you wonder what it shall be like to look in the face of our Savior whose eyes are glowing like flames of fire and his head and hair are white like snow? (Revelation 1) He who loved you before you were born and created you for His delight and purpose. To be with Him forever – heavenly. Smith This month much has occurred and is still occurring at Olivet Baptist. To begin March, a charter member, Mrs. Sadie Jarvis, was summoned home to be with her Savior. Her funeral was held March 7 at the Lewis Funeral Home in Milton. Following that week was the Daylight Savings Time change. And, as it had been voted on last fall, the evening services are to continue to meet at 6pm and will remain at 6pm no matter the time of year. (This is in hopes of making evening services available to those who have to work until 5pm.) On the business meeting of March 13, the personnel committee announced names selected for the pulpit search committee. These names were presented to the church body and accepted. Sunday, March 17, Bro. Wendell was asked to baptize two new members. (And after a struggle of getting the water to look rust-free, the water was clear for the service.) And still upcoming is Palm Sunday, which will also have Bro. Wendell and Ms. Brenda Stokes’ farewell luncheon in the Fellowship Hall to celebrate his retirement, and to acknowledge and appreciate his help and efforts in guiding Olivet as Pastor. March 31 this year is Easter. Olivet will have Sunday School and morning worship at the usual time. There will be no evening worship in order to give folks time with their families. And also, with Easter, it will be Bro. Wendell’s last Sunday as Olivet’s Pastor. Please be prayer that the Lord will direct and guide our search committee to the man the Lord has selected to lead Olivet in the its next chapter. With Olivet’s next chapter – Time ever marches onward. Onward to the day Jesus will rule and reign on earth. That is a day worth marching toward and looking forward to as the days pass fleetingly.
