Truth for Today
1 John 1:9 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Each night when I get ready for bed I take my medicine. It is medication that is supposed to lower my cholesterol which helps keep my heart healthy. It’s a discipline I don’t forget because of its importance to my well-being.
There is a discipline that is even more important to our well-being…our spiritual well being. It is the discipline of confession. Yes…that’s right…the discipline of confession. John challenges believers with this assurance, “If (when) we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
I know you have heard, “Confession is good for the soul.” It is very good for the soul. Too often we get burdened down with guilt and shame and remorse that makes us feel dirty and awful. But when we “confess” our sins…we find a faithful Father who forgives and cleanses.
Just what is confession? I am glad you asked that question. Confession is simply agreeing with God about our sin. It isn’t informing Him that we have sinned. He knows our sin in great detail. He knows every thought…every action…every deed done throughout the day. He isn’t surprised by anything we tell Him. In confession to HIM we agree with Him that sin is in our life and that we are hopeless without His grace and forgiveness. And by the way…make sure it’s specific and to point. For example, “Lord, I sinned today by getting angry in line at Wal-Mart and I ask You to forgive me.” But, you know what HE might do? He might tell you to go to Wal-Mart and ask that girl running the checkout lane to forgive you as well.
There is not a friend like Jesus who takes our sins and sorrows and casts them as far as the east is from the west. Go to Him in confession…its really good for you.
Father, I am a sinner in need of Your grace…I say what I ought not to say…I do things I ought not to do… please forgive me…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
