THE WORD FOR TODAY
1 Kings 10-12
1 Kings 10-12
1 Kings 11:6 6 Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and did not fully follow the LORD, as did his father David.
Evil happens when we do not fully follow the LORD!!!
Just ask Solomon. For a man gifted with such great wisdom from God, he blew it when it came crunch time. Scripture records that his many foreign wives turned his heart away from God. Wives mind you that God had specifically forbidden him to marry. The saddest indictment on his life is in verse 6, “Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and did not fully follow the LORD, as did his father David.
You are I are susceptible to EVIL when we don’t fully follow the LORD. So how can we fully follow the LORD so that we don’t fall to the call of evil?
First there must be FULL SURRENDER to Christ. I think that is the problem. To often there is not that full surrender to Christ. Some years ago at a church camp I learned a something about surrender. In a ropes course my group of youth had to carry me through a maze of ropes. I couldn’t help them…I couldn’t touch the ground…all I could do was surrender my body into their arms holding me off the ground, getting me through the obstacle without dropping me. In fact they did it and my group won the race that day. When fully surrendered to Christ HE helps us through the maze of stuff in this world.
Secondly, we must be ROOTED in the Living Word of God. That was Solomon’s problem. He did not root himself in God’s Word. In the presence of beautiful foreign women he totally forgot God’s HOLY Word. The aroma of costly perfume caused him forget God’s Word. We pay a high price when we don’t root our lives in God’s Word.
Then finally there must be complete SOBER Mindedness. The Bible challenges us to be clearheaded as we walk in this world. Peter said the devil is a roaring lion seeking whom he may destroy. By the way the devil is skilled at destruction but our LORD is filled with forgiveness through mercy and grace.
Jesus gave us a great prayer that can guard and protect us from evil…as we pray…
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.
