Truth for Today
Ezekiel 5:11 11 ‘Therefore, as I live,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘surely, because you have defiled My sanctuary with all your detestable things and with all your abominations, therefore I will also diminish you; My eye will not spare, nor will I have any pity.
I am so grateful for the folks that clean our church. It’s amazing how much and how quickly a sanctuary gets all trashed up from a full week’s activity. Yet, when I enter the sanctuary of God on Sunday there it is all nice and clean.
God through Ezekiel was concerned about His sanctuary which had been defiled. It was dirty but not from normal Sabbath use. God’s sanctuary was defiled and dirty because of the unrighteous behavior of His people. The people were not bringing pure offerings. They were bringing less than what God expected of them. He had no problem with calling the fruit of their disobedience an abomination.
I am saddened by this picture of God’s people…the ones He loved so much having such disregard for His house. Then I look into mirror. I remember how easy it is to DEFILE the sanctuary of God.
We defile God’s sanctuary through intentional sin and selfish motives. We then refuse to repent and confess that sin when confronted with its reality.
We defile God’s sanctuary through neglecting a daily walk with Him. I can only imagine the power of God if, on a Sunday we gathered together and all of His people had walked with God all week long through prayer, Bible reading and service…and then bring those collective experiences with God into His sanctuary.
We defile God’s sanctuary through our silence. I wouldn’t know how to react if ALL God’s people decided to sing and worship with all their heart. I remember a concert by Casting Crowns. When it was finished and as we rushed to leave the building there was a huge cry from the crowd. They wanted them to sing another song. Of course they came back onstage and the song was fantastic. What if this Sunday the congregation demanded that we sing one more song to the honor and glory of our Savior?
Isn’t it time we stop defiling God’s sanctuary?
O God I am so sorry that we defile Your sanctuary…forgive us Lord and help us to resolve to never again take for granted the wonderful opportunity we have for worship, praise and adoration …In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
