THE WORD FOR TODAY
Jeremiah 37-39

Truth for Today

Jeremiah 38:6 6 So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.

There is nothing “fun” about a mud hole.  I remember my early days when I worked in the rice field.  My job was to take a shovel and each day walk around the outside levies looking for breaks where water was leaking.  Needless to say that walk each day was MUDDY.  It was so bad I would have nightmares that involved mud.  I sure got my fill of mud.  But that mud was nothing compared to what Jeremiah was facing.

Jeremiah’s penalty for faithfully preaching God’s Word…a mud filled dungeon. Read it, “So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.”

Those words, “So Jeremiah sank in the mire.”, cause me great sadness.  Jeremiah’s only purpose in life was to faithfully preach God’s Word to the people.  Unfortunately it was a not the word that folks of that day wanted to hear.  But you know what is interesting…even though Jeremiah, deep in the mire of that dungeon…seeming worlds away from the problem…his name and his preaching were still having an impact.

You see…no one can silence faithfulness.  In a day and time when the Christian voice is being marginalized and hushed…the faithful prayers of God’s people can and will serve to amplify ten fold the power of God’s Word.  I think of a high school where a young graduate invoked the name of Jesus in her graduation speech.  The officials were ready…they muted her mic so the hundreds there couldn’t hear her…but they didn’t silence her faithfulness to God because millions have heard and read about a school attempting to silence faith.  No one can silence our faithfulness to HIM.

Father, may we boldly and faithfully LIVE for You this day…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!

Blessings
Brother William
