THE WORD FOR TODAY
Judges 8:33 33 So it was, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel again played the harlot with the Baals, and made Baal-Berith their god.”
Why do we return to the sin that so easily ensnares us? Why do we say, “Yes”, to the pull of the old way of life? Why do we give in to the lust of the flesh? Why do we surrender to the call of temptation? After all of our promises to Him…why do we break every single one of them in one single selfish decision?
Gideon had led the people to freedom by subduing Midian with the help of God. While he was alive the people were faithful to God. But, when Gideon died, “The children of Israelagain played the harlot with the Baals, and made Baal-Berith their god.” Baal-Berith was the local god of Shechem mentioned in the Book of Judges. It has been suggested that the Israelites and local inhabitants of Shechem ratified a covenant there in the temple of Baal. What is very clear is that scripture records a terrible image of the infidelity of Israel as they “played the harlot” with baal-berith (lower case intentional).
To what do we play the harlot? What draws away our devotion to God? What distracts us from being His witness? What divides our heart? What saps us our spiritual vitality? What turns us away from the Living God?
Father…send Your Holy Spirit to convict me and draw me back to Your arms of grace, mercy and love…forgive my idolatry…cleanse my iniquity…cover me with YOURSELF…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
