Truth for Today
Jonah 4:1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry.
ANGER is a powerful enemy…especially when that anger is directed against other people.
Jonah was angry that God relented and granted mercy to the people of Nineveh. In verse 4 scripture records his incredible anger. He wanted those folks to perish. That last thing on his list of wants was to see this city survive the wrath of God.
The root of this anger was pure hatred. It’s really hard to fathom that someone could be that angry…but I have seen anger that deep…that awful. This is the kind of anger that wells from the depths of hatred deep inside a person. We have seen this kind of anger exhibit itself…most recently in the VA Tech slayings.
What is the saddest part of this chapter of the bible…I believe Jonah died an angry and bitter man. This book doesn’t mention Jonah relenting of his anger…it only shows him holding on to it for all of his life. It illustrates that he was more grateful for a gord tree than he was the repentance of an entire population. WOW!
Hear me please…none of us is immune to that kind of anger. None of us can look down our nose at Jonah and say, “Shame, shame.” Given the right circumstance we could walk the same path to Tarshish that Jonah walked.
Jesus gives us the cure for this kind of anger. He said, “Forgive and you shall be forgiven.” Chew on that for a while. Ask the Father to show where you need to forgive…and then do it.
Father, may hatred, anger and bitterness never consume our heart…but by your grace help us to forgive as in Christ we have been forgiven...IN JESUS NAME…AMEN!!!
