Proverbs 14:3 3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.
I have never said anything I regret. True or False?
Ummmmm…yeah it’s false. I have said things I regret. Sometimes I wish I had a special watch with a little dial so that I could turn back time just 5 seconds to “unsay” what I just said.
A very wise person said, “He who guards his mouth preserves his life…” A redneck interpretation of that passage, “Keep yer mouf shut and ye don’t get any trouble.”
It’s true. The wisdom writer was absolutely correct. If we guard what we say then it prevents many bad things from happening. Now it begs the question though, “How do I guard what I say?”
First, we must get a Grip on the tongue. Try this….grip your tongue really hard and then try to talk. I just grabbed my tongue and attempted to say something. Nothing intelligible came from my lips. It’s a scientifically proven fact that you can’t say anything intelligible with a GRIP on your tongue.
Secondly, we must get a Heart that cares. One of my prayers is that God transforms my heart into an instrument of compassion. When I care about somebody then I won’t injure them with meaningless fodder from my mouth.
Finally, we can guard what we say by Filtering what we want to say through the power of God’s Holy Spirit. In a split second of a split second the Holy Spirit can reveal whether what we are about to say is worth saying or unworthy of saying. If we listen to the Holy Spirit, HE will give us a spirit of discernment. Discernment is a powerful filter that can prevent hurtful words that harm others.
He who guards his mouth preserves his life!!!
Father, my words are precious Lord…may I spend them today with care, compassion and encouragement. By the power of Your Spirit guard my mouth. May I not regret a word I say before this day is out…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
