Ecclesiastes 2:10 10 Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, For my heart rejoiced in all my labor; And this was my reward from all my labor.
If you were to inherit one million dollars, what would be the first check you would write? Our answer to that question reveals something about our heart.
Notice the wisdom writer said, “I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure”.
I would hope that if I were to inherit a million dollars that first check would be my tithe to my church. But I recognize that we live in a pleasure driven society. For example, I gain pleasure from my iphone which I bought because of the snazzy commercial. I love that thing…until it doesn’t work. I gain pleasure from gadgets and gizmos….until a newer gadget and gizmo hits the tech world. I don’t need to read “tech news”. The sale of virtually everything we enjoy in life is driven by pleasure.
Let me say very clearly, “Pleasure is a gift from God.” God placed Adam and Eve in a paradise garden. Don’t you think He wanted them to have pleasure?
The rub is when the desire for pleasure robs us of our desire for God. Pleasure can become an idol. The desire for pleasure can become all consuming. The desire for the things that rob us of time with God can become crippling. The wisdom writer would go on and say, “This was meaningless…a chasing after the wind.”
With one million dollars in the bank would I withhold my heart from any pleasure? I pray that I would. Because I want my life to be a living sacrifice for Him WHO lived, WHO died, WHO was buried, and WHO rose again for me and for you. Jesus is my reason for breathing morning, noon and night. Jesus is the cure for being driven for pleasure because at the end of this life…HE is all we have.
Father, protect me from the incessant call of pleasure…pull me to the Cross where I can lay down my life in service to YOU…In Jesus Name…AMEN!
