Psalm 141:3 3 Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.
TRUE or FALSE…Sticks and stone may break my bones but words will never hurt me.
Life has taught me that “words to hurt me”. Ask anyone who has been the brunt of unjust and harsh criticism. Ask anyone whose character has been attacked by baseless accusations. Words do hurt especially when they are directed at our heart.
Twenty Two years ago I had a confrontation with a church member. During that encounter she said to me, “Preacher I love to gossip and you can’t stop me.” The problem is that her gossip had already driven a very talented family away from that church. Her acid lies were destroying the fellowship of that church and she didn’t care.
Now I can write and preach against gossip all day long until I listen to a recording of my own voice at the end of the day. I can rail and rant and rave about the evils of tale bearing until I listen to every word I said the minute behind me.
The Psalmist asks God, “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips.” Jesus asked, "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye.” It hurts to stand the before my God and King and know that I have talked when I shouldn’t have been talking. I have looked at the speck of sawdust while missing the PLANK in my eye. It stings. It should. I feel terrible. I should.
When we talk in the wrong crowd, we hurt people. When we enjoin the gossip circle and spread lies, we hurt people. When we tell a tale and add a little detail that doesn’t exist, we hurt people. When God’s people who are called by HIS name slander the good name of good people…we hurt people. Shame on us.
Our prayer every second of everyday of our life ought to be, “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.”
O Father, forgive our loose lips. Cleanse the impurities of our tongue. Wash our mouth…our heart…our life with YOUR cleansing power…In Jesus Name…AMEN!!!
