Truth for Today
1 Corinthian 10:14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
You may remember the movie, “Forrest Gump”. Forrest was a little bit slow but he could really run. I love the scenes where Jennie is telling him, “Run Forrest Run.” And Forrest would run like the wind.
Today the scripture challenges believers, “Run Christian Run.” What do we run from? We RUN from idolatry. Paul challenged the Corinthian church, “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”
Idolatry was a major challenge for early Christianity. Little statues of gods that don’t exist who promised things they could never really deliver were all over the place. One of the great distinctions between Christians and non-christians was the issue of idolatry. Believers knew the words, “Thou shalt have no graven images.” They knew that God was serious.
So why was Paul challenging the Church to “flee from idolatry”.
At risk of being too simplistic with such a complex subject, “Idolatry is subtle.” An idol is, “Anything that takes the place of God in our life. It’s ANYTHING that requires our devotion…devotion we owe to God is an idol.”
Now if you think about it…the list of possible idols is virtually endless…is it not? Golf was an idol in my life at one time. I would get angry when someone from church interrupted by “daily” round of golf. I don’t play golf anymore…and won’t play golf again.
Flee from idolatry…flee from anything that robs God of honor, glory, devotion and love that HE should receive from His people…flee from idolatry.
Father, show me that thing that takes away from my love and devotion to and strengthen to flee from it and to run toward YOU…In Jesus Name…Amen!!!
