THE WORD FOR TODAY
1 Chronicles 28-29
1 Chronicles 28-29
1 Chronicles 28:7-9 7 They gave for the work of the house of God five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. 8 And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the LORD, into the hand of Jehiel[b] the Gershonite. 9 Then the people rejoiced, for they had offered willingly, because with a loyal heart they had offered willingly to the LORD; and King David also rejoiced greatly.
I read two disturbing statistics this morning. 1. That LESS than 6% of "Christians" in the U.S. Tithe. 2. "Christians" in the U.S. spend more on DOG FOOD than they give to churches and Christian ministries.
David was preparing Solomon and the people of God to build the temple…the house of God. That preparation would be costly. The temple would be a very beautiful and elaborate facility. God had given clear instructions about its construction and what was to be in the temple. Then the people had opportunity to “give” to the building of the temple. Scripture records that with a loyal heart they offered willingly to the LORD.
It is a blessed privilege of all believers to be able to give to the work of the LORD. In my denomination more than 10,000 missionaries are able to provide direct ministry here in the US and abroad because of our Mission’s Program. Through our Baptist Global Response we have been working on the ground in Haiti. At home here in the United States we have a hundreds of trained volunteers ready to enter disaster areas with food, shelter, cleanup and hope because of the giving of our people. This moment 6 Seminaries are preparing future ministers to preach and teach the gospel of Christ. Without the giving of the churches those seminary students would have to bear a heavy financial burden. I know, because I graduated from a Southern Baptist Seminary and I am so grateful for the gifts of God’s people.
I also know that incredible mission work is being done by all the mainline denominations through the giving of their people. Their minister’s and missionaries are being trained because of the gifts of God’s people.
I rejoice at the giving of God’s people. Not because I get a pay check but because they are supporting work in the KINGDOM OF GOD. When we offer willingly to the LORD it makes someone somewhere rejoice.
But at risk of preaching, if that statistic is true, more “Christians” in the U.S. spend more money on dog food than they give to churches and Christian ministries, are we doing all we could do?
Thank You Father for the Good News of love and hope that is ours to take into the entire world. May we give willingly with a loyal heart to the LORD…IN JESUS NAME…AMEN!!!
